A new study by Flurry takes a look at how many new apps are being launched on Android vs. iOS and how much developers are making from apps on each platform.
According to the company, Flurry Analytics are being used by 55,000 companies over 135,000 applications. During 2011, analytics were set up for about 50,000 apps. The chart below shows the number of apps integrated with Flurry by quarter. The percent of new projects created for iOS is in gray and the percent of projects for Android is in green. Notice it's estimated that 73% of apps launched in Q4 will be iOS apps.
Flurry also did a check to see which platform was most profitable for developers.
We pulled a sample of in-app purchase data from a set of top apps with versions on both iOS and Android, comprising of several million daily active users (DAUs). Running the numbers, we find that, on average, for every $1.00 generated on iOS, the same app will generate $0.24 on Android.

I'm not surprised that Android provides lower returns and less profit for developers compared to iOS.
