iH8sn0w, developer of sn0wbreeze and iFaith, has found a way to downgrade the firmware on A5 devices.
Using saved SHSH blobs, iH8sn0w was able to downgrade his A5 iPad 2 from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1. He says his method will also work with the A5X processor once firmware updates are released for the new iPad. That means that it's possible to restore to any firmware you want on A5 devices, as long as you have the SHSH blobs saved.
This is great news for those with the iPhone 4S and newer iPads. As it stands now, if you have to restore for any reason, you will be forced to upgrade to the latest firmware. This could leave you without the ability to jailbreak for some time.
Found a loophole in Apple's apticket system. Restored my iPad 2 to 5.0.1 from 5.1. Works on all A5 devices. :)
A5X devices will work too once Apple pushes a new firmware for it.

Of course, downgrading is pointless. Why would anyone want to downgrande to 5.0.1 once 5.1 is jailbroken. You should concentrate your efforts on jailbreaking, not in downgranding. One the jailbreak is realesed, the time you wasted in founding a way to downgrade will be trash.

People need unlocks for many different reasons. Also not all of us are underage children whose parents buy IPhones for them.WTF

This is great news but the article should not be posted until the actual way to do it has been released!

They need to stop announcing these like this. Just say "there is a way to downground". Dont give any details, Apple will now study apticket system to find the loophole. It's best to leave it unsaid until the JB is released. Then make it open source, who cares then.

Hi,
I am not new in this stuff :-). I have jailbreaked few iPhones, touch and one iPad 2 (5.0.1) already, but this time it is not possible :-(. I tried both versions of absinthe mac and win without success. The main problems are two - I am not able to start VPN on iPad and I cannot restore 5.0.1. I am on 5.0.1. but I read somewhere that restore could help. I think the problem is that Apple is not allowing restore to 5.0.1 (shift+restore) but only to 5.1. Did you do JB in last 14 days after 5.1 release?

U're the man. Good to see some progress has been made, long overdue.... I think there should be a law of phones being locked to a carrier. After your term, you should be able to unlock it without any questions asked. At the end of the day it's your phone for which you paid for.

whats the point of downgrade if you can't even unlock the initial baseband? jailbreak only?
0
Paul - March 25, 2012 at 12:31pm
Jailbreaking purposes mostly. Basebands cannot be downgraded.

I agree. It is almost 2 years since anyone unlocked a baseband. Just jailbreaking is no fun!!!!
C'mon guys, we need an unlock.

Who the hell wants an unlock? Unlocks are no longer needed... Apple already sells unlocked phones... We only need untethered jailbreaks. I really hope nobody ever spend their valuable time looking for unlocks.

Jailbreaking makes the phone AWESOME, unlocking just makes the poor people happy. If you want unlock, PAY FOR IT like many of us did. Factory unlock + Jailbreak + Downgrade possibility = AWESOME
I hope an unlock NEVER comes out so that you people start buying factory unlocked.
