A supply issue with Qualcomm LTE chips could assure that the next iPhone will launch in October, according to analyst Gene Munster.
In a note to investors, Munster says that even if Apple wanted to launch its next generation iPhone this summer, supply issues would prevent that from happening.
"It is more likely the phone launches in October given Qualcomm commentary around 28nm chip supply," he said. "We believe Apple will include LTE in the iPhone 5 as an important feature in the product update."
Munster also noted that the timing of the launch is "irrelevant" and all the matters is how compelling an upgrade the LTE device will be.
Apple is expected to utilize Qualcomm's "MDM9615" LTE chip in the new phone.
Update: "At this stage we cannot secure enough supply to meet the increasing demand we are experiencing," said Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs.
"Demand went so far ahead of availability that we've decided to start spending more money to get more supply as soon as possible," he told Reuters. "Any time we can't make a customer totally happy I'm going to worry. You don't want to give a customer a reason to go elsewhere."
I don't understand. Do the Writers of these posts NEVER READ COMMENTS?
5th Gen iPhone is the iPhone 4S. STOP Calling Next iPhone which is the 6TH Gen there is NO #5 involved.
Dude, stop freaking out on numbering! The iPod Touch 4G is actually the #3 iPod Touch version. It was named 4G just because it came after iPhone 4.
Apple doesn't give a crap on numbering. If they did, they wouldn't have named the iPad 3 "the new iPad", scratching numbering all together.
You are right this is going to be version 6 of the iPhone, but it's going to be called iPhone 5 (or perhaps "the new iPhone"). The next iPod Touch will be 5G, despite it being version 4.
Just live with it and don't freak out when Apple doesn't release your "iPhone 6"...
"You don't want to give a customer a reason to go elsewhere." this is exactly why the iPhone 5 will come in June. We are simply tired of hearing about a new handset, with no results,( unless your counting the 4s) and it's high time for a new iPhone! What has it been?, 2 years or so since a revised phone?(unless your counting the 4s again) Come on apple, we are ready dammit. Don't make me buy a Galaxy note come June. Which I keep hearing isn't that bad.
