Microsoft may be working on its own branded smartphone in addition to the Windows Surface tablet recently announced, reports Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund.

Separately, our industry sources tell us that Microsoft may be working with a contract manufacturer to develop their own handset for Windows Phone 8. It is unclear to us whether this would be a reference platform or whether this may be a go-to market Microsoft branded handset. We would not be surprised if Microsoft were to decide to bring their own handset to market next year given that Microsoft has decided to bring to market their own Windows 8 'Surface' tablet/PC products.

As with its new tablet Microsoft could be looking to draw attention to its recently unveiled Windows Phone 8 platform.

It will take MS quite a lot of $, with deep discounts and free software to win over the Android camp. As far as the Apple camp goes, it's too late, I'm afraid.

Yes, yes they are... They demoed their new OS 8 on a Nokia dual core prototype and Nokias new CEO is formerly from MS... MS is reportedly investing a billion a year in Nokia as well... Sounds like a partnership to me...

MS is going to try selling retail, trying to respond to user demands? Anyone remember the short lived MS stores, or it's success with the Zume player? Even with its XBox brand, it's always relied on others with more experience with sales. Now they're suddenly going to take on software, design, manufacturing, sales, customer support AND keep up with the fast changing smart phone competition. It took Apple years to put all that crap together, and now MS expects o get it up and running at the get go. No matter how wonderful these devices are, I suspect they're setting themselves for a big fall, one once they see their stock price slip, all bets will be off.
