Bloomberg is reporting that Apple will indeed release a smaller cheaper iPad by year-end.
The new model will have a screen that's 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn't made its plans public. The product, which Apple may announce by October, won't have the high-definition screen featured on the iPad that was released in March, one of the people said.
Earlier today another report from China said Apple is working on an iPad mini that will cost $249-299 and feature a 7.85-inch Sharp IGZO display panel.
With Google's recent announcement of the Nexus 7 tablet, many believe Apple may be more likely to release smaller iPad to protect its market share.

I take my iPad everywhere I go, and I'm happy that it has a big screen. I see no reason of apple releasing a smaller version of iPad

It's the only thing to do because if you walk in parks in NYC you'll only see people with featherweight ereaders and you won't find an iPad out there because there too big and heavy for people to lug around Apple needs a smaller and lighter iPad

If you want to make that story believable, show at least a correctly scaled picture of the iPad mini. You should know that the app icons don't become smaller just because the device is smaller!

What would make more sense is to leave the iPad alone. There already I an iPad mini- it called an iPod touch. But because it is designed for games and videos etc the 3.5" screen is way too small for its use. it would make much more sense to make an iPod touch max with a 5-7 inch screen or similar.

Not me. While I've got an iPhone 4S, and iPad 2 & a new iPad, I see absolutely no reason to get a limited 7" version, especially if it's low-res. This is Apple chasing Amazon to the bottom of the profitability pile.

Exactly That's where the money $$$ is people want readers to carry around that are light and a little smaller Nobody brings iPads to parks..... They want one hand readers.
