AT&T Increases iPhone Early Termination Fee to $325

AT&T has announced the increase of their Early Termination Fee for customers who want to opt out of their smartphone contract.

For customers who enter into new two-year service agreements in connection with the purchase of our more advanced, higher end devices, including netbooks and smartphones, the ETF will increase to $325, and be reduced by $10 for each month that you remain with us as a customer during the balance of your two-year service agreement. After that, the ETF will no longer apply.

This latest move has added fuel to the rumor that Verizon could get the iPhone 4G as early as this fall. Increasing the ETF for iPhone owners will make it more difficult for customers to switch to Verizon.

Read the text again this is for NEW contracts only not for current contracts your ETF will stay the same unless you renew!

As soon as Verizon get the Phone, I'm GONE!....... My Contract is done, but I still have to get a NEW phone. I even have a REPEATER setup here just to get AT&T signals.. There a JOKE now! Guess there doing business like they want and don't CARE what people think... (( EVERYONE SING: By, by miss American Pie ))

Rhetorical Question: What does it say about a company when they have to imprison their customers in order to keep them? Why not focus on delivering an excellent and competitive service? This is not a sustainable business model. Didn't work for AT&T's long-distance business and ultimately won't work for their wireless business. It's a classic case of business executives focusing on their personal quarterly results and kicking the "can" of big/risky decisions ahead to the executive who has their responsibilities at the future point in time when the can/decision can no longer be kicked forward and must be acted on.

It's a shame that AT&T haven't seized the iPhone opportunity to please their customers, build brand loyalty, and expand their network. They've had (and perhaps will have) the iPhone exclusivity for nearly 3 years but have only dug a hole for themselves. The extra revenue the iPhone brought in should have been spent on upgrading their service (which they need to do) and introduced fair and honest network charges. Instead, they've only concentrated on extracting cash from customers who wan't a quality smartphone but are forced to choose their network. I for one am very disappointed with Apple since they are well aware of the deficiencies in AT&T's service and haven't so far offered the handset to other providers. The exclusivity contracts are bad for customers as they inhibit price competition on particular handsets which in turn makes them more expensive and less desirable. Apple could sell more iPhones is the carrier charges were less! THIS IS JUST BAD BUSINESS
