Following an earlier rumor that Apple purchased iCloud.com from Xcerion, it's now being reported that Apple has already begun using the name internally, according to AppleInsider.

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is prepping beta versions of both iOS 5.0 and Mac OS X Lion ahead of its annual developers conference that integrate with a service dubbed "iCloud," enabling users to sync and store much of the same information they currently can with the company's existing MobileMe service, such as bookmarks, email, contacts and iCal events.

9to5Mac suggests that Apple may have purchased a portfolio of iCloud domains from Xcerion including: iCloudNews.com, iCloudos.com (net and org, too), iCloud.org, LiquidCloud.com (net and org, too), iCloudBlog.com, LeadCloud.com, AlbumCloud.com.

Apple is expected to release its next generation mobile operating system at WWDC 2011. Its 'iCloud' service could launch alongside or as part of iOS 5.
