Apple is reportedly giving two tablet projects codenamed J1 and J2 to its partners for development, according to DigiTimes.

The new iPad model expected in March will be thinner and raise the tablet's resolution to 2048 x 1536, says the report. Component makers have been working hard to adjust the LED and panel module designs to meet Apple's requirements; however, their work has affected Apple's launch schedule.

The sources revealed that the major differences of the new tablet PCs compared to the previous model are their size, specifications and technologies. Since the new tablet PCs have a higher resolution, Apple has demanded the design of the light source to be changed from a single LED light bar to two LED light bars on the left and right sides of the machine, but since the method of adopting two LED light bars has created difficulty in shrinking the machine's thickness, some vendors have come out with designs that only adopt one light bar, but are packing two LED chips into one package.

DigiTimes says the J2 project appears to be an upgraded version of the J1. It's unclear which Apple will use for production; however, component suppliers have already conducted pilot production and prepared for mass production. Since the new iPad's specifications are similar to those of the iPad 2, their sources believe the new tablet is just an upgrade of the iPad 2.
