Apple to Introduce a New Micro Dock Connector?

Apple is reportedly planning to ditch the traditional dock connector in favor of a smaller alternative, according to iMore.

We've heard that Apple is getting ready to ditch the dock connector as it's currently sized and implemented on iPods, iPhones, and iPads. The reason isn't anything political, like a new desire to conform to an outdated micro-USB standard, but typically Apple: to save space inside the iPhone 5 for what are now more important components. /i]

iMore suggests the main reason Apple is looking at a smaller dock connector is to gain valuable internal space. Perhaps to make room for a LTE chip. Interestingly, 9to5Mac noticed that before the release of the iPhone 4S, the WSJ reported that "the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone".

If Apple was to design a new micro connector for the next iPhone, they could provide an adapter that would allow consumers to still use their older accessories.
