Stamen Design has created a map of the secret bus lines run by Apple, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, EA and eBay to shuttle their employees to work in San Francisco.

An alternate transportation network of private buses—fully equipped with wifi—thus threads daily through San Francisco, picking up workers at unmarked bus stops (though many coexist in digital space), carrying them southward via the commuter lanes of the 101 and 280 freeways, and eventually delivers them to their campuses.

An art project to map these private bus lines called "The City from the Valley (2012)" was commissioned by ZERO1 and presented with the support of the James Irvine Foundation.

Stamen Design used their Dotspotting site to create a map of the shuttle stops around the city. They then enlisted people to go to stops, measure traffic, and count people getting off and on. Bike messengers were hired to see where the buses went and their routes were transcribed using Field Papers. It's estimated that the shuttles transport about 35% of the amount of passengers Caltrain moves every day. Google is said to run about 150 trip per day.

The final project was displayed at the ZERO1 Garage in San Jose, California until last month.

Take a look at the map below!
