Best Buy is recalling thousands of third party MacBook batteries due to the risk of fire, reports the Associated Press.

5,100 ATG lithium-ion replacement batteries were sold online or shipped to customers through Geek Squad between September 2008 and June 2012. The replacement batteries cost around $50.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission there have been 13 reports that the battery caught fire with one customer suffering a serious burn.

Best Buy is voluntarily recalling both the black and white model of the batteries for a replacement or Best Buy gift card. The black battery is model "MC-MBOOK13B" and the white battery is model "MC-BOOK13W".

Best Buy offered the following statement to Gizmodo:

After receiving reports from customers of these lithium ion batteries overheating when charging, we believe the right thing to do is to contact our customers and ask them to return the product for replacement or for a Best Buy gift card. While we are only one of many companies that may have sold these batteries, we feel they are a potential fire and burn hazard and want to keep our customers safe.
