A company of researches have created an algorithm that uses location tracking data on people's smartphones to predict where they will be in 24 hours. The average error is only within 20 meters (about 65 feet).

While previous researches have done the same type of study, they have never been able to be as accurate due to breaks in people's patterns. To solve this issue, these researchers combined tracking data from the participants phone as well as their friends. By correlating their location information with their friend's, the researchers came up with a way to guess the location.

Mirco Musolesi, Manlio Domenico, and Antonio Lima of the University of Birmingham won this year's Nokia Mobile Data Challenge for this algorithm.

From a commercial standpoint, advertisers like Google could one day target ads to you by knowing where you will be the next day.
