According to preliminary results by Gartner, overall worldwide PC shipments declined in the second quarter by 10.9 percent. Overall PC shipments dropped to 76 million units, which marks the fifth consecutive quarter of declining shipments (the longest duration of decline in the PC market's history).
The US market held up the best compared to the rest of the world, but still saw a 1.4% decline in shipments. Gartner attributes this decline primarily to the strong growth of tablets.
“We are seeing the PC market reduction directly tied to the shrinking installed base of PCs, as inexpensive tablets displace the low-end machines used primarily for consumption in mature and developed markets,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “In emerging markets, inexpensive tablets have become the first computing device for many people, who at best are deferring the purchase of a PC. This is also accounting for the collapse of the mini notebook market.
Apple's estimated shipments are down -4.3% in the US -- placing it in third place. However, the report notes that this figure does not include iPads, but does include Windows 8 tablets. Dell and Lenovo saw the only growth in the US with Toshiba taking the biggest hit.
