According to a report from SemiAccurate, Apple has bought into a chip fab and is looking to produce their own chips -- backing up rumors that the company is striving to produce its own CPUs.
Apple has just done something that SemiAccurate has been expecting for months and entered the fab industry. No we are not joking, Apple just bought into a fab, and not in a trivial way either.
Most of the report is behind a paywall, so we do not have the specifics. However, the report does claim that Apple is looking to move away from Samsung as the producer of A-series chips for its iOS devices and other manufactures like Intel, TSMC, Global Foundries, and IBM are not able to meet Apple's needs.
The report is tagged with UMC which refers to the Taiwanese Semiconductor company United Microelectronics Corporation. Perhaps UMC is involved in Apple's efforts somehow. SemiAccurate is not always the most accurate site, as it predicted in 2011 that Apple would move away from Intel processors. It did however guess Apple's move to Nvidia graphics in 2012.
Any efforts regarding Semiconductors would most likely be lead by Bob Mansfield, an area which Tim Cook said they had "very ambitious plans"
