North Korea's state computers are running a knockoff of Mac OS X dubbed 'Red Star', reports ComputerWorld.
Red Star previously had a design that was similar to Windows 7; however, the new 3.0 version looks very much like OS X.
Developed by the Korea Computer Center (KCC) in Pyongyang, the latest version was released in mid-2013. Images of the software surfaced after Will Scott, a computer scientist who spent a semester teaching at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), was able to purchase the software at a KCC dealer and upload screenshots.
While most North Koreans are restricted from accessing the Internet, many can get access to a nationwide intranet through universities and public libraries. The intranet offers websites for domestic institutions and is heavily skewed towards offering information, educational materials such as PDF versions of books and scientific papers, and government propaganda.
Red Star Linux also features a web browser based on Mozilla that has been re-branded "Naenara," or "My country." Notably, it also includes a copy of Wine, a linux software application that lets users run certain Windows programs.
