Sony is in negotiations with Apple to double its supply of camera components for the new iPhone, according to Nikkei.
The Japanese firm already supplies nearly all of the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors for the current iPhone models' rear-mounted main cameras. Apple is likely looking to switch to Sony sensors for the secondary camera on the screen side, used for taking self-portraits.
Sony is expected to do $3.47 billion in image sensor sales this fiscal year and holds 32.1% of the market.
Notably, Apple's request for more components is the reason the company just purchased a plant from Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics, according to a source involved in the negotiations.
Sony is also a supplier for Samsung and Huawei. Recently, the company announced the sale of its VAIO PC division in a renewed focus on its imaging and mobile business.
