Google to Challenge Apple's HealthKit With 'Google Fit'

Google is reportedly planning to launch a new health service called Google Fit which will collect and aggregate data from fitness trackers and health-related apps. The company is expected to launch the service at its Google I/O conference on June 25th and 26th, says Forbes.

The service would be a direct challenge to Apple's new HealthKit framework which aggregates data from wearable devices and apps. It also rivals Samsung's 'Sami' platform which does the same.

Google Fit will aggregate data through open APIs, instruction sets that allow apps to share information, and will also announce partnerships with wearable device makers at its I/O conference, Forbes understands. One source with knowledge of Google’s plans said Google Fit would allow a wearable device that measures data like steps or heart rate to interface with Google’s cloud-based services, and become part of the Google Fit ecosystem. Google could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

The site says it's unclear if Google Fit will be built into Android or whether it will a standalone app. We'll let you know what's announced at Google I/O later this month. You can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
