When the first stress tests of the purported sapphire front display for the iPhone 6 surfaced, many were excited and anxious to finally have a nearly indestructible front screen on their iPhone. However, according to an analyst from JPMorgan Securities Ltd, Apple does not have enough sapphire to satisfy the demand for the iPhone 6. As a result, the sapphire display could be limited to high-end iPhone 6 models only.

“Sapphire covers will also be restricted to high-end iPhones, possibly the 128GB [gigabyte] ones,” the brokerage said in the report.

JPMorgan says that Apple only has enough sapphire to produce about 10 million iPhones, which is not nearly enough to meet the demand that the iPhone 6 is seeing. It is possible that the sapphire display will be limited to the 5.5-inch model, and the 4.7-inch model will use gorilla glass instead, as previous reports indicated. The analysts also believe Apple's iPhone 6 could spark smartphone-sapphire adoption.

The iPhone 6 is expected to be announced this September and could launch in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes. Rumors point to an improved processor, an all new design, an improved camera, and more.
