Apple has announced 629,000 jobs created or support in Europe on a new microsite spotted by the WSJ.

Throughout our history, we have created entirely new products — and entirely new industries — by focusing on innovation. This has resulted in nearly 630,000 European jobs at Apple and at developers and businesses supported by Apple. In addition, the App Store has created hundreds of thousands of jobs that previously did not exist in the European economy, enabling developers to launch new companies and earn $6.5 billion from App Store sales worldwide.

Apple says that 497,000 jobs are directly attributable to the App Store, 132,000 European jobs are directly or indirectly supported by Apple, 116,000 European jobs have been created at other companies as a result of Apple’s growth, and 16,000 employees work at Apple in Europe.

The company notes that "The number of Apple jobs based in Europe has grown substantially over the past decade to 16,000. These jobs require people with a wide variety of skills — including sales, supply chain and risk management, operations, manufacturing, and customer service."

Apple also highlighted its expansion in Cork, Ireland:

Apple is proud to have been doing business in Cork, Ireland since 1980. We have grown our workforce to roughly 4,000 employees, who serve our customers through distribution, manufacturing, tech support, and other critical functions. These employees play an important part in Apple’s success and continued growth in Ireland. We are thrilled to continue expanding in Cork with our new facility. The building is in the process of being certified with the “Excellent” rating according to BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the leading international standard for best practice in sustainable building.
