Apple is planning more expansions for its Reno data center, reports the Reno Gazette Journal.
Apple has applied for several new permits to bring additional data clusters buildings, bringing the total building count at the data center to nine.
Apple submitted permit applications for two additional data cluster buildings as it ramps up yet another phase of development for the site. The new facilities will bring the number of data cluster buildings at the Apple campus to eight, including the initial 20,000 square-foot rapid deployment module that went live earlier this year as part of "Phase 1" development. Apple also completed an administrative building a few months ago as part of the data center's second phase of development, which is expected to wrap up by the end of summer as the location transitions to its third phase.
With over 2,200 acres available for development, Apple has ample room to continue its growth in the area.
"They just keep plugging along," said Trevor Lloyd, a development planner for Washoe County. "Apple keeps submitting plans … and it looks like they'll be expanding for a long time."
While Apple's data center is pushing along, its plans for a downtown Reno facility have been silent. Apple negotiated tax incentives totaling about $89 million over 10 years, but it has yet to show its plans for downtown.
"I haven't heard anything and, as far as I know, no one in the city has heard anything," said Bill Thomas, assistant city manager for Reno. "I'm not saying we won't hear from them but it's been silence on their end (as of now)."
