Foxconn's new factory in China may be used to produce sapphire displays for the next generation iPhone, according to China Economic Weekly.

The report, relayed by Focus Taiwan says that on Tuesday Foxconn signed an agreement with the Zhengzhou city government in Henan Province, central China to build a display factory on 133-hectares of land next to its iPhone 6 assembly plant.

The new factory is expected to manufacture sapphire displays for the next generation of the Apple devices, the report said.

Despite a disastrous end to its relationship with GT Advanced, it's believed that the company is still looking to sapphire to give its mobile devices scratch-resistant screens.
