Google has announced a deal with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile to pre-install Google Wallet on Android phones starting later this year. In addition, the company is purchasing tech from Softcard, a mobile payments app backed by the carriers.

So today, we’re excited to announce that we're working with AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, as well as their mobile payments company Softcard, to help more Android users get the benefits of tap and pay. Under this relationship, the Google Wallet app, including the tap and pay functionality, will come pre-installed on Android phones (running KitKat or higher) sold by these carriers in the US later this year. We’re also acquiring some exciting technology and intellectual property from Softcard to make Google Wallet better.

Softcard also announced the deal saying, "Google has acquired Softcard technology and capabilities to power the next generation of mobile payments." The company said customers can continue to tap and pay with their app but noted more information would be shared in the coming weeks.

Both Google and Samsung have been taking steps to rival Apple Pay, the new mobile payments service from Apple. Samsung recently announced that it was acquiring LoopPay, a mobile wallet solutions provider that turns existing magnetic stripe readers into secure, contactless receivers.
