Apple CEO Tim Cook Discusses ConnectED Initiative on Good Morning America

Apple CEO Tim Cook made an appearance on Good Morning America today to discuss the company's involvement in the White House's ConnectED initiative.

The initiative was announced in 2013 and Apple pledged $100 million to the project in February of last year. GMA had posted a misleading tweet yesterday suggesting Cook was to announce a "new plan".

"I think technology has to be a key part [of education] and that’s why we’re here," Cook said. "Too many times today kids aren't given the right for a great public education and this isn't right. It's not fair. I wouldn’t be where I am today without a great public education."

"Kids today, they're born in a digital world, but too many kids, when it comes time for the 8 o’clock bell to ring, go to an analog world," he continued. "It’s not engaging."

Apple has committed to provide their support to schools where at least 96 percent of the students are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program.

Technology paired with passionate and well-supported teachers enables deeper creativity and learning. That’s why every student at our ConnectED schools will receive an iPad, allowing students to connect with topics and express themselves like never before. Every teacher and administrator will receive an iPad and a Mac to help support and inspire their students. And every ConnectED classroom will have an Apple TV to help students immerse themselves in the educational content they discover and the work they create.
