VirnetX Seeks $532 Million From Apple for Patent Infringement

VirnetX Holding Corp claims Apple owes it $532 million for infringing its patents, reports Bloomberg. The company previously won a $368.2 million verdict against Apple but that was thrown out by an appeals court and a new trial was ordered to calculate damages.

“Apple hasn’t played fair. They have taken Virnetx’s intellectual property without permission,” VirnetX lawyer Brad Caldwell of Caldwell Cassady told the jury in Tyler, Texas.

“Apple believes in fairness and protecting intellectual property,” said Apple’s lawyer, Greg Arovas of Kirkland & Ellis. “VirnetX keeps moving the boundary, asking for more and more and more.”

VirnetX accuses Apple of using its patents for FaceTime, iMessage, and VPNs (Virtual Private Networks). Apple's VPN on Demand service was previously found to infringe VirnetX patents. If Apple is found to have infringed on VirnetX's patents, damages are to be calculated based on the value that those patents contributed to the features.

The trial is expected to last through next week. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
