Apple has reportedly diversified suppliers for the SiP (System in Package) module that will be used in the second generation Apple Watch.
Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) grabbed the majority of orders, reports DigiTimes.
Amkor Technology and STATS ChipPAC, a unit of Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology (JCET), have also obtained a portion of SiP module orders for the second-generation Apple Watch, said the sources. The first-generation Apple Watch features Apple's custom-designed S1 SiP module provided exclusively by ASE, which enjoyed significant growth in revenues generated from its EMS business driven by brisk shipments of its SiP products, the sources noted.
While both Nanya PCB and Kinsus Interconnect Technology supplied substrates for the first generation device, only Kinsus has secured orders for the second generation thus far.
Samsung will continue to receive processor orders for the upcoming Apple Watch, according to sources.
Conflicting reports have the Apple Watch 2 launching in June or this fall alongside the iPhone 7.
