Elon Musk Expects Apple Car to be in Production by 2020

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he expects Apple to have a car in production by 2020 in an interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at Code Conference.

Notably, Musk doesn't see Google as a direct competitor that would launch a vehicle. Rather, he expects the company to license its technology.

Addressing Apple, Musk said, “I would say that it’s great that they’re doing this and I hope it works out.”

However, he doesn't see the Apple car reaching production until 2020.

“I think they should have embarked on this project sooner, actually... I don’t think they’ll be in volume production until 2020.”

Musk suggests the timeline may reflect a missed opportunity.

“It’s just a missed opportunity. It’s a couple years... they’ll make a good car and be successful.”

Apple's work on an electric car is somewhat of an open secret. Just last week, a report revealed that company was researching how to charge electric cars, talking to charging station companies and hiring engineers with expertise in the area.
