Apple Watch Could Get Micro LED Display in 2017

Apple is developing Micro LED panels which could replace Apple Watch OLED panels. This would happen in the second half of 2017 at the earliest, reports DigiTimes.

Apple acquired US-based Micro LED developer LuxVue Technology in May 2014 and set up a laboratory in northern Taiwan specifically for R&D of new display technologies in April 2015, the sources said.

mLED displays are easier to read than OLED displays in direct sunlight and they use significantly less energy than LCD. Micro LED ranges in size from 1-micron to 100-micron, and production cost is currently higher than that for OLED.
