Ireland announced that it will submit an appeal over the EU's ruling that it granted unfair tax benefits to Apple today.
Ireland's Minister of Finance, Michael Noonan, made the following statement to the EU's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee:
As you will be aware on 30 August, the European Commission published the results of its investigation in relation to Apple and its tax treatment in Ireland. We set out our position very clearly at the time. The Government fundamentally disagrees with the European Commission’s analysis and the decision left the Government no choice but to take an appeal to the European Courts and this will be submitted tomorrow. So in that light, given that the case is the subject of ongoing legal proceedings, I am constrained by what I can say in making any further comment.
In August, the European Commission ruled that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple and must recover the unpaid taxes from Apple for the years 2003 to 2014 of up to €13 billion, plus interest. More details on the decision here.
