Sharp is planning to invest $864 million USD to set up an OLED production line at a Foxconn factory Zhengzhou City, northern China, reports Nikkei. Foxconn acquired a 66% share in the company last year.

Japan-based Sakai Display Products (SDP), of which Foxconn chairman Terry Guo and Sharp are shareholders, has invested JPY57 billion to set up an OLED trial production line and will kick off volume production in 2018. Dai Cheng-wu, Foxconn vice chairman and president of Sharp, indicated that Sharp's establishment of OLED production capacity will hinge on the results of SDP's trials.

It's rumored that the production line will be specifically for supplying OLED panels to Apple for use in upcoming iPhone models. However, production is purportedly set to begin in 2019 so Apple would have to source panels from other suppliers if it moves to OLED this year. Recent reports have suggested that Samsung will be the exclusive supplier of OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone.
