Apple to Start Assembling iPhones in India by the End of April

Apple will start assembling iPhones in India by the end of April, according to a statement from information technology minister Priyank Kharge.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has tapped Taiwan's Wistron Corp to assemble iPhones in Bangalore. Executives from Apple met with Kharge in January and confirmed the timeline.

“Apple’s iPhones will be made in Bangalore and all devices will be targeted at the domestic market,” said Kharge, IT minister for Karnataka, of which Bangalore is the capital. “We did not discuss any other incentives,” he said.

“In the longer term, it’s a great move,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a recent earnings call. “We are in discussions on a number of things, including retail stores, and fully intend to invest significantly in the country.”

Currently, Apple ranks tenth among smartphone vendors in India and accounts for only 2% of shipments in the country.
