Apple is planning to switch to OLED displays for all its iPhone models by 2019, according to a report from The Bell.
The site says that Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Interflex are investing heavily in equipment to make the flexible printed circuit boards (FPCB) which will be needed for the OLED iPhone.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has already started to expand its Vietnam plant in the second half of the 100 billion won range, and Interflex is considering investing 100 billion won in the second half of this year.
Despite the expansion, the shortage of FPCBs is expected to continue due to the massive demand from Apple. The company will allegedly switch all its iPhone models to OLED by 2019.
Even if SEMCO and Interflex are going to expand capacity, the industry expects that the shortage will continue rather than oversupply due to the huge demand from Apple. Apple plans to introduce OLED panels to all iPhone models by 2019. This year's introduction accounted for only 40%, but next year it is expected to double to 80% and 100% next year.
