Apple is reportedly working in secret with Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology on automotive batteries, reports Yicai Global.

The company is secretly working with a Chinese battery manufacturer on automotive battery research and development, which indicates that the firm’s car project involves not only software but also hardware, Yicai Global has learned.

CATL split off from Amperex Technology, the largest supplier of batteries for Apple's consumer products, back in 2011.

“If Apple is working with CATL on a battery, the possibility that Apple will continue to make cars cannot be ruled out as one of the core components of self-driving electric cars is the battery,” CCID Consulting’s New Energy Director Wu Hui told Yicai Global.

While the full extent of Apple's plans are not known, CEO Tim Cook recently confirmed the company was focused on autonomous technology.

"As we look at it, what we're focusing on, what we've talked about focusing on publicly, we're focusing on autonomous systems. Clearly, one purpose of autonomous systems is self driving cars. There are others. We sorta see it as the mother of all AI projects. It's probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on. So autonomy is something that's incredibly exciting for us and we'll see where it takes us. We're not really saying from a product point of view what we will do but we are being straightforward that it's a core technology that we view as being very important."
