Apple Acquires PowerbyProxi Wireless Power Company

Apple has acquired wireless power company 'PowerbyProxi', reports Stuff.

The company was founded in 2007 out of the University of Auckland’s wireless power center of excellence. It designs and develops safe, high efficiency and high density wireless power technology.

PowerbyProxi is on a mission to provide real world resonant Wireless Power solutions to the market and unplug the last cable. We believe in the future of Wireless Power and we think it is paramount to enable this technology in a way that maximizes safety, reliability, efficiency, and value. We’re founded in New Zealand, and closely connected to The University of Auckland where we have access to the world’s best and brightest wireless power research engineers and leaders.

Apple SVP Dan Riccio confirmed the acquisition. The "team will be a great addition as Apple works to create a wireless future," said Riccio. "We want to bring truly effortless charging to more places and more customers around the world."

PowerbyProxi CEO Fady Mishriki says, "The team and I are thrilled to join Apple. There is tremendous alignment with our values, and we are excited to continue our growth in Auckland and contribute to the great innovation in wireless charging coming out of New Zealand."

Apple's latest iPhones support Qi wireless charging and the company will release AirPower, a wireless charging mat, next year.
