Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co has begun mass production of next generation processors for new Apple iPhone models expected to launch later this year, reports Bloomberg.

The processor, likely to be called the A12 chip, will use a 7-nanometer design that can be smaller, faster and more efficient than the 10-nanometer chips in current Apple devices like the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, the people said. They asked not to be identified discussing private plans. Apple and TSMC spokeswomen declined to comment.

The new chips will run faster and use less power allowing Apple to extend the battery life of its devices. Apple will be one of the first to use 7nm chips in consumer devices; however, Samsung is also working to build processors using a 7nm process this year.

Apple is widely expected to unveil three new smartphones this fall, including: a 5.8-inch OLED iPhone, a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, and a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
