Foxconn will begin assembling flagship iPhone models in India as early as next year, according to a new report from Reuters.

Foxconn will be assembling the most expensive models, such as devices in the flagship iPhone X family, the source said, potentially taking Apple’s business in India to a new level. The work will take place at Foxconn’s plant in Sriperumbudur town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, said the source, who is not authorized to speak to the media and so declined to be named.

Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister M C Sampath says the company will invest $356 million to expand its plant which currently makes phones for Xiaomi. The investment could add as many as 25,000 jobs.

Until now, only lower cost iPhone models including the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s have been assembled in India by Wistron. If Foxconn does begin assembling newer iPhones there, it could help Apple mitigate risks associated with the China-U.S. trade war while avoiding costly import duties on devices sold locally.

Foxconn is also considering the establishment of a factory in Vietnam which would provide the company another production base outside of China.
