Code references found in iOS 12.3 beta suggest that Apple is working on bringing support for EMV Express Transit payments to Apple Pay.
Apple already supports Express Transit payments for select stored value cards such as Suica in Japan.
"If your Suica card is set as your Express Transit card, simply hold the top of your iPhone or Apple Watch within a few centimeters of the ticket gate scanner when you enter and exit. Your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on, but it doesn't have to be connected to a network. You don't need to wake or unlock your device or open an app when you enter or exit the ticket gates. You'll see Done and a checkmark on the display."
Support for Express Transit is currently limited to transit providers working directly with Apple; however, with EMV support you could choose any Visa, Mastercard or American Express to travel on a supported system.
Tap Down Under recently discovered new strings in the iOS 12.3 beta that make mention of new ‘Transit Network Identifiers’ options, as well as new passUpgrades/open loop options.
You’d be able to set your preferred EMV card (again, Visa, Mastercard or American Express) to use for ‘Express Transit’ – no need to authenticate, just tap your iPhone or Watch at an Opal reader.
