Apple Suppliers to Produce Components for 75 Million iPhones in 2H19 [Report]

Apple's suppliers are preparing to produce components for up to 75 million new iPhones in the second half of 2019, reports Bloomberg. That's roughly the same number as a year ago, suggesting demand for the smartphone has stabilized.

The volumes planned for the next iPhone launch cycle would signal steady demand for the company’s most important product, despite U.S.-China trade tensions and a decline in the overall smartphone market. The Cupertino, California-based technology giant stopped divulging iPhone shipment numbers in the holiday quarter last year as unit growth turned negative and started providing metrics to highlight the growth of services such as Apple Music. Analysts estimate Apple sold 70 million to 80 million new iPhones in the second half of last year.

Sources say that suppliers are gearing up to produce parts for three new iPhone models that will launch later this year. If needed, production could be ramped even higher, facilitating production of up to 80 million new phones.

To secure the needed workforce, Foxconn has stepped up hiring and is offering workers about 10% more than it did last year.

Although this year's volume estimates indicate some stabilization in iPhone sales, it's a big change from the double-digit growth we've seen in previous years. Additionally, planned production for 75 million new iPhones doesn't mean Apple will sell that many. Leaks suggest that Apple will not continue its tick, tock release strategy this year. That means customers may decide to pass on this year's minor update and wait to see if next year brings a more significant one.
