BMW will no longer charge subscription fees for access to Apple CarPlay on all models operating its latest infotainment system, reports Autoblog.

Earlier today, Autocar revealed that customers in UK wouldn't have to pay £85 per year to access the feature following their free first year. Autoblog has since confirmed that applies to the USA as well.

A BMW spokesperson told us that they “can confirm that this change does also apply to the U.S. market.” When we asked why the sudden change of heart, the same spokesperson sent us this statement: “BMW is always looking to satisfy our customers’ needs and this policy change is intended to provide BMW owners with a better ownership experience.”

Models that aren't running the latest infotainment system such as the i3, i8 and runout examples of the 2 Series and 4 Series, will need to pay £235 for a lifetime subscription.

Customers that have already paid for a subscription will be offered a free unlimited subscription instead. No announcement yet about refunds but hopefully we'll learn more soon.
