Apple is planning to launch its first MacBooks with custom-built ARM-based processors in the fourth quarter of 2020 or the first quarter of 2021, according to a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

It's unclear if the ARM-based MacBook would be a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. There's also the possibility that Apple could revive the 'MacBook' line to debut the custom chip.

The new notebook is in addition to the refresh that Kuo expects next quarter. That refresh is expected to bring a new scissor switch keyboard, faster processors, and a slightly larger mini-LED display.

If Apple was to launch its own processors for macOS, the company would likely provide developers with advance notice to prepare for the transition. This could have taken place at WWDC in June; however, that event will likely be cancelled given concerns over coronavirus.
