Apple's next generation 6.7-inch iPhone 12 will reportedly feature sensor-shift image stabilization, reports TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The technology could expand to additional models in 2021.

Currently, Apple uses optical image stabilization which means that an element inside the lens is shifted to compensate for camera shake. With sensor-shift image stabilization the image sensor is shifted inside the camera to compensate for camera shake.

The advantage of sensor-shift image stabilization is that any lens attached to the camera will be able to utilize the built-in stabilization. The disadvantage is that typically you wouldn't be able to preview the stabilized image on screen making it harder to compose a shot. However, Apple may be able to take care of this with software.

Kuo also predicts that at least one iPhone model will get a periscope lens in 2022. This would allow for 5x optical zoom like the Huawei P30 Pro or even 10x. Currently, the iPhone only has 2x optical zoom.

The periscope lens is reportedly being designed in partnership with Taiwanese supplier Genius Electronic Optical.
