Apple plans to begin selling Macs with custom ARM-based processors by next year, reports Bloomberg.
Sources say the company is working on three processors, based on the A14 processor in the next generation iPhone. The first chip will purportedly be much faster than the processors in the iPhone or iPad.
Apple is preparing to release at least one Mac with its own chip next year, according to the people. But the initiative to develop multiple chips, codenamed Kalamata, suggests the company will transition more of its Mac lineup away from current supplier Intel Corp.
TSMC is said to be building the new chips on its 5nm process. The first Mac processors will reportedly have 8 high-performance cores, codenamed Firestorm. It will also have four energy-efficient cores, codenamed Icestorm. In the future, Apple could design processors with over 12 cores.
Bloomberg believes the ARM transition will begin with a new laptop because to start Apple won't be able to rival performance offered by Intel for high-end MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac Pros.
Notably, a second generation of Mac processors is purportedly under development already. Those processors are based on the same architecture Apple is using for the 2021 iPhone.
