TSMC has begun pilot production of chips using its new 3nm process, according to a DigiTimes report.

TSMC has kicked off pilot production of chips built using N3 (namely 3nm process technology) at its Fab 18 in southern Taiwan, and will move the process to volume production by the fourth quarter of 2022, according to industry sources.

Samsung is scheduled to start producing 3nm-based chip designs earlier than TSMC; however, the site says it's unclear how many major customers Samsung will be able to attract.

Apple is purportedly planning to use TSMC's 3nm process for the new iPad Pro next year. It will likely be the first device powered by N3 chips. Plans are still being finalized to use the 3nm process for the 2023 iPhone.
