Apple increased its share of the tablet market in the fourth quarter of 2021 despite a decline in shipments, reports IDC.

Worldwide tablet shipments reached 46 million in 4Q21, a decline of 11.9% year over year. For the full year, tablet shipments were up 3.2% at 168.8 million units.

"Though 2021 was a great year for the tablet market, shipments have begun to decelerate as the market has moved past peak demand across many geographies," said Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "However, shipments in the near future will remain above pre-pandemic levels as virtual learning, remote work, and media consumption remain priorities for users."

Apple shipped 19.1 million units in 4Q20; however, that shrunk to 17.5 million units in 4Q21. Despite this, the company went from 36.6% market share in 4Q20 to 38% market share in 4Q21.

For the full year, Apple led the competition with 57.8 million units shipped and a market share of 34.2%. Samsung came in second with 30.9 million units shipped and a market share of 18.3%.
