Apple is developing a new powerful 'Mac Studio' computer based on the Mac mini, according to 9to5Mac. This is in addition to the rumored new Mac mini and Mac Pro.

Based on information seen by 9to5Mac, the new Mac Studio is primarily based on the Mac mini, but with much more powerful hardware. Apple has two versions of Mac Studio under development. One features the M1 Max chip (the same as the 2021 MacBook Pro) and the other a variant of the Apple Silicon chip that is even more powerful than the current M1 Max.

Sources say the Mac Studio is codenamed 'J375'. It will sit in a new category between the Mac mini and Mac Pro, aimed at professional users.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has predicted a "half-sized Mac Pro with equivalent of either two or four M1 Max chips". It's possible that the 'Mac Studio' is this device.

The site suggests that with the launch of the 'Mac Studio', Apple would have more time to work on the Mac Pro. Perhaps even releasing another Intel version before transitioning it to Apple Silicon. The Mac Studio could be paired with a new 'Apple Studio Display' also under development.

Apple is holding a "Peek performance" special even on March 8. It's unclear if the company plans to unveil this new device at the event or hold off for later this year, perhaps at WWDC.
