LG is aiming to land MicroOLED orders for Apple's second generation mixed reality headset, according to a new report from TheElec. The company is expected to order deposition equipment from Sunic System that will be used to develop and manufacture MicroOLED panels.

Apple's first generation headset will purportedly use Sony's MicroOLED for the display while also having an outer screen or 'indicator' that will be a regular OLED panel supplied by LG.

MicroOLED technology mounts the OLED on a silicon substrate, unlike conventional panels that mount them on glasses. The technology is also called OLED on Silicon, or OLEDoS, and is expected to use more widely for virtual, augmented and mixed reality devices. MR devices require display and optical technologies and Sony is a leader in the latter.

Given that Sony could be a rival in the MR space, it's suggested that Apple could prefer LG as a supplier if the company could produce a rival display.

Apple's first gen headset is now expected to launch next year.
