Apple is encouraging developers to make use of its new RoomPlan API that uses the camera and LiDAR Scanner on iPhone and iPad to create a 3D floor plan of a room.

In a post to its developer blog today, Apple said:

Now your apps can create 3D floor plans — including key characteristics, such as dimensions and types of furniture. Powered by ARKit, this new Swift API utilizes the camera and LiDAR Scanner on iPhone and iPad to bring surroundings into your apps.

RoomPlan Highlights:
● Engage customers, streamline workflows
Help customers make more informed decisions by using RoomPlan to create a floor plan of a room directly in your apps, such as real estate, e-commerce, or hospitality apps. These scans can also be the first step in architecture and interior design workflows to help streamline conceptual exploration and planning.

● Real-time scanning with LiDAR
Completely customize your app's user experience and scan guidance, or utilize the built-in coaching UI for optimal scans, visual feedback illustrating real-time scanning progress, and a dollhouse visualization that shows everything in the room that has been recognized.

● Parametric representation
RoomPlan outputs in USD or USDZ file formats that include dimensions of each component recognized in the room, such as walls or cabinets, as well as the type of furniture detected. The dimensions and placement of each individual component can be further adjusted when exported into various USDZ-compatible tools, such as Cinema 4D, Shapr3D, or AutoCAD.
