Apple may delay the release of iPadOS 16 until October, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Typically, Apple has released iOS and iPadOS updates at the same time - just after unveiling new iPhones in September. However, this year's update features a major upgrade to multitasking on iPad and it's still buggy.

The delay of the software is due, at least in part, to an ambitious effort to overhaul the iPad’s multitasking capabilities. The update includes a feature called Stage Manager that lets users operate several tasks at the same time, resize windows and bounce between different clusters of apps. During beta testing, the system has drawn criticism from some developers and users for its bugs, a confusing interface and lack of compatibility with most iPads.

By staggering the release, Apple can put more engineering resources into readying iOS 16. It could then time the release of iPadOS 16 to coincide with new iPads. The company is expected to unveil a new iPad Pro with an M2 chip, as well as, a faster entry-level iPad this fall.

Notably, Bloomberg believes that the macOS Ventura update is still scheduled for release in October and watchOS 9 is still set to arrive in September.
