Apple's long awaited new Mac Pro will not feature user upgradable RAM or a new design, according to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Apple has yet to upgrade its powerful desktop with an Apple Silicon chip, missing its previously announced schedule. Recently, Gurman said Apple had cancelled plans to release a high-end configuration with 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores. This means that the Mac Pro will likely get an M-series Ultra chip, the same chip used for the Mac Studio.
Now, it's said that Apple will not offer user expandable RAM, further limiting its benefit over the smaller and less expensive Mac Studio.
Apple plans to release a version with the M2 Ultra, making it unclear — beyond the machine's expandability — why most users would buy it over the cheaper and smaller Mac Studio. In another disappointment, the new Mac Pro will look identical to the 2019 model. It will also lack one key feature from the Intel version: user-upgradeable RAM. That's because the memory is tied directly to the M2 Ultra's motherboard. Still, there are two SSD storage slots and for graphics, media and networking cards.
Despite the lack of a faster processor or upgradable RAM, users will presumably be able to add storage and expansion cards via the desktop's PCI Express card slots.
