Google Experiments With Blink Powered Web Browser for iOS

Google is experimenting with a Blink powered web browser for iOS, according to a thread on the Chromium bug tracker.

Bug to track creating a content_shell application that compiles in the necessary parts of blink, content, and components on iOS. This experimental application will be used to measure graphics and input latencies by providing traces for analysis.

Currently, the application is experimental only and not intended to ship.

Experimental only, not a launch bug for a shippable product. Anyone who wishes to follow along can star this bug. If you would like to test it yourself, follow the child bug for build instructions when they are ready. As an open source project, we accept contributions.

Apple's App Store Guidelines prohibit web browsers that don't use its WebKit engine; however, the EU recently passed the Digital Markets Act which will soon require Apple to allow sideloading of apps, third party app stores, outside payment services, and more. It's possible that Google may be preparing for a day when Apple will not be able to restrict iOS web browsers to its own engine.
