Apple has named Carol Surface its first ever Chief People Officer, according to an internal memo sent to employees by CEO Tim Cook.

Surface was hired from Medtronic where she served as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Last year, Surface was named the top CHRO in the world by N2 Growth.

Apple is removing the responsibilities for human resources from Deirdre O'Brien, previously the SVP of both Retail and People, and giving them to Surface. She will report to direct to Cook starting in March.

Surface "brings an incredible depth of experience, which will be invaluable in supporting our teams around the world and building on everything that makes Apple so special," the company said in a statement. "As we expand Apple Retail to reach more customers, Deirdre O'Brien will continue to lead the business with the same excellence and care that has helped our teams do their best work and deliver unparalleled customer service."

Notably, Apple had an estimated 164,000 employees at the end of 2022, up 6.49% from 2021. You can download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more Apple updates.
